Spicy Tuna Appetizer

Share

If you like Sashimi Tuna, you will love this appetizer.

Since this recipe calls for raw Tuna, I have one tip that you should follow prior to preparing this recipe. Always freeze any raw fish prior to preparing, if you are eating it raw. This will kill any parasites. If you purchase it already frozen, then you just need to thaw and rinse the fish.

I always thought you could ask for sushi grade fish at the market, but there really is no such thing. Many seafood markets or seafood counters at grocery stores, often advertise fish as sushi grade, but in the United States, there are no regulations for using this phrase and no guarantees of the fish freshness. Certainly ask the fishmonger about the freshness of the Tuna and ask if it is safe to eat raw. I would still freeze it prior to eating to ensure it is safe.

With that said, raw Tuna is so delicious. The tuna is the highlight in this dish and the added ingredients create a fantastic Tuna appetizer, that is very easy to make.

SPICY TUNA APPETIZER

Ingredients:

  • 1 & 1/2  Pounds Fresh Tuna
  • 1/2 Cup Matchstick Carrots
  • 1/2 Tablespoon Fresh Ginger, grated
  • 1/2 Tablespoon Garlic, minced
  • 1/4 Cup Green Onion, diced
  • 1 Tablespoon Sesame Oil
  • 1 Tablespoon Hot Chili Oil
  • 1 Teaspoon Sesame Seeds, for garnish

Directions:

1. After freezing the Tuna, or if you purchased frozen Tuna, thaw it overnight in the refrigerator.

2. Rinse the thawed Tuna under cold water and pat dry.

3. Cut the Tuna into bite size pieces. About 3/4 of an inch in size. Transfer the Tuna into a medium size bowl.

4. Add the Carrots, Green Onion, Ginger, Garlic, Sesame Oil and Hot Chili Oil to the bowl with the Tuna. Fold everything together ensuring everything gets coated.

5. Refrigerate the Tuna for 20-30 minutes to allow the flavors to marry.

6. After 20-30 minutes, transfer the Tuna to a serving plate or dish and garnish with the Sesame Seeds.

You can serve this with condiments if you like. I don’t find it necessary since there is so much flavor in this dish already, but you can make a condiment tray of wasabi, soy sauce and pickled ginger if you like.

I couldn’t find hot chili oil so substituted sweet chili sauce which obviously resulted in different flavor than the recipe intends but it still turned out really good! Very easy which is how I cook ?

    • Hot Chili Oil is found in the Asian aisle at almost every super market. I would NOT suggest using sweet chili sauce in this recipe. If you do not have any Hot Chili Oil on hand, you could make a substitute. Add 1/2 cup Olive Oil and 1/4 teaspoon dried crushed red pepper flakes to a small saucepan and warm on low for 3-5 minutes stirring often, let it cool and then you can use the called for amount in this recipe as a substitute. The Hot Chili Oil is meant to give this recipe a slight kick of heat which is the complete opposite of a sweet thick red sauce.
