Tater Tot Hot Dish

A classic Hot Dish!

I live in Minnesota and we call casseroles, Hot Dishes. Tater Tot Hot Dish is a favorite here in the Midwest. There are many varying recipes. This is my tried and true recipe. Very simple and easy to make. That is what a good Hot Dish is supposed to be…easy, simple, comfort food.

TATER TOT HOT DISH

Ingredients:

  • 1 Pound Ground Turkey
  • 1 (32 oz.) Bag Tater Tots
  • 1 (16 oz.) Bag Frozen Mixed Veggies, partially thawed
  • 1 Cup Yellow Onion, diced
  • 2 (10 & 1/2 oz.) Cans Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup
  • 2 Tablespoons Soy Sauce
  • 2 Cups Cheddar Jack Cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 Tablespoon freshly Ground Black Pepper

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. In a medium size bowl whisk together the Soy Sauce, Pepper and two Cans Cream of Mushroom Soup. Set aside.

3. In a large frying pan, crumble the Ground Turkey into the pan, add the Onions into the same pan. Over low heat, stir the Ground Turkey and Onions until the Onions are tender and the Turkey is browned. Transfer the Ground Turkey and Onion into an 8 x 11.5 baking pan. Spread it out evenly in the bottom of the pan.

4. Spread the Soup Mixture evenly over the top of the Ground Turkey.

5. Spread the Mixed Veggies evenly on top of the Soup mixture.

6. Place the Tater Tots, in even rows, on top of the Mixed Veggies, as you see here. You will only use about 1/2 to 3/4 of the bag of Tots, so pop the remaining back into your freezer to serve another time.

7. Bake the Hot Dish, uncovered in the preheated oven for 40-50 minutes. Check the Hot Dish at the 40 minute mark. You are looking for the Hot Dish to be bubbly and the Tots to be golden brown. The Hot Dish took 45 minutes in my oven.

8. When the Hot Dish is done, remove the pan from the oven and sprinkle the Cheese evenly on the top of the Tots. Place the pan back into the oven and allow the Cheese to melt. Once the Cheese has melted remove the pan from the oven. Allow the Hot Dish to cool for 5 minutes prior to cutting. It should be piping hot!
